Llandovery, Wales - 21st May. CycleOps Power Road Sportive followed by the Chain Reaction Cycles MTB Marathon (Sunday) - Llandovery: 21st May 2011 2011 sees the return of the CycleOps Power Road Sportives at more locations across the UK – three in fact. So Saturdays will be all about riding on skinny tires! This year’s first CycleOps Power Road Sportive will take us to a brand new location - Llandovery, Carmarthenshire, an area famous for its quality riding but up to now never visited by the Road Sportive or CRC MTB Marathon series. The event is located in a stunningly scenic area in the heart of the Brecon Beacons and Black Mountains - an ideal place for one of the most breathtaking and challenging Road Sportives in the 2011 series. This new addition to the line-up should bring in a lot of pre-entries. So if you are keen to join us at the Llandovery round then make sure that you get your entry in soon. CycleOps Power Road Sportive: This first round of the CycleOps Power Road Sportive will start and finish at the Llandovery RFC. On top of this, the ‘double-header’ weekend will feature the usual MTB Marathon action – 22nd May. As the road sportive comes to an end, the mountain bikers will start to descend on the event village. John Lloyd is once again going all out putting two demanding sportive courses together. Apart from showcasing the fantastic road riding in Carmarthenshire, be prepared to be amazed and rewarded with long, challenging climbs, countless miles of smooth, fast undulating roads and the most picturesque scenery the area has to offer. A further two more Road Sportives will feature in the series – at the next round in another brand spanking new location, Marshbrook, England, and in the all-time favourite location, Selkirk. Distance: The sportives will have two distances to choose from: Climbing: approx 2,000meters Download Course MAP Details PDF Climbing: approx 2,500meters Download Course MAP Details PDF Course Description The Llandovery Sportive, starting at Llandovery rugby club, offers you 85 miles Classic with 2500m climbing or 55 miles Standard with 2000m climbing, of superb riding through the Cambrian Mountains in Mid Wales. This route starts travelling north through Cynghordy, here the climbing starts, 2 miles or so towards Tirabad, then a gentle descent all the way to Llangammarch Wells, through Beulah,Turning north on a singletrack roadthrough the remote Gwesyn Valley taking in the notorious Devils Staircase, here the road descends steeply and at the bottom, at 30 miles the route splits. The shorter distance riders skirt around the edge of the Llynbrianne Reservoir then travel south along the Towy valley back to Llandovery, while the long distance riders have to conquer 2 more monster climbs before a 5 mile descent to Tregaron. From here the route continues to descend gently to Llandewi Brefi and then follows the course of the River Teifi for a good 15 miles of relatively flat terrain to Llanybydder, from here, after a 3 ½ mile climb up to Rhydcymerau, the route undulates through Llansawel and Llangadog, finishing with a nice flat run in to Llandovery alongside the River Towy. Start time: The CycleOps Power Road Sportive will start between 8.30am – 10.00am at the Llandovery RFC. Registration opens: Friday from 6.00pm – 9.00pm Saturday from 7.00am – 9.00am Entry fee: £27 or reduced price of £47 if you take part in the discounted ‘weekend ticket’. Tea, coffee and cake will be served at the finish line as well as food at the feed station(s). Campground: Camping will be available (included in the entry fee) from Friday night through to Monday morning at the Llandovery RFC. Riders will benefit from all facilities provided at the campground and event village across the weekend. It will be signposted from Friday afternoon onwards.
